Winter fishing (flatties & squid)

Fishing very slow in Frederick Henry Bay (water temp tad over 9 degrees) atm so decided to head up to Orford on Sat where water temp was 12 degrees and managed a few nice flatties chaps and some cracking squid

Thanks for that: it's good to hear someone's getting out and catching a few!  Water has been very cold all around the southern coast and estuaries, for quite a while now. Nevertheless, I'll go try my luck somewhere tomorrow: I'm starting to go stir-crazy again, waiting for the last few weeks until the trout season opens once more.

In response to your query in your other post, I would expect there should be the odd sea-runner about in the Huon between Huonville and Franklin / Cradoc, but I haven't been game to brave the FREEZING early mornings we've had of late, to go and find out.  That might also be on my list to address, soon!

Whilst calamari (like many species) tend to prefer the warmer months they are certainly about. White 3inch jigs seem to work best in both overcast and sunny conditions

Well, I went and spent this morning dawdling around North-West Bay in a flat calm.  Water temp barely 8 degrees C. Tried here, there and everywhere with soft plastics, tweaking the boat along with the oars, just bumping the SPs along the bottom.  Result?  Just five flatties, of which only two were a fit size to keep.  That's SL-O-O-O-W fishing in anyone's book.

I checked the "Tides4Fishing" website when I got home, and it said today would be an abysmal day for fishing, so there you go.  I'll check it BEFORE deciding to go out, next time!

Can't wait for trout season opener. I'm hoping for a cracking early season.
