Opening Weekend 19/20 season
« on: November 03, 2019, 03:02:46 pm »
Anybody get out for the crayfish opening weekend (ex ECSRZ)?

We took the dingy down to Southport for the day on Saturday. It was a bit drizzly for most the day but the wind was pleasant. We managed 3 sized males to keep and also found two sized females but were in berry so had to be put back. There seemed to be a lot of rats around with other fishermen reporting rats in their cray pots. While we were there we also caught some Longfin pike, bag limit of abalone, octopus and some calamari. It was good to a relatively small amount of sea urchins in the area compared to most of the east coast, disappointing however to see a Giant Kelp forest has disappeared from an area (4 years ago it was there). Ah well, overall a good day on the water.

To add to the topic as well, itíll be interesting to see the effects of opening up just few small areas of the East Coast for weeks earlier. Wouldnít say itíll be positive for the fishery in and around Southport considering the amount of boats down there. Suppose our trust should be in the people that manage the fishery for us...
