southern inshore quick report
« on: December 15, 2018, 08:53:42 am »
Had a beaut day out last Sunday; took my son and the no.1 grandson for grandson's second-ever day in the boat.  Headed down the Channel out of Trial Bay; managed to get one small calamari for grandson's edification then they went quiet.  Moved a bit further down towards Woodbridge, set up a drift, and got his first-ever flathead....then his second, third, fourth.... Every drop with the soft plastic he caught a fish!  I reckon we boated over 40 for the morning but very few (ie, only 4) were keepers.  Still, fun fishing for a little kid.

As a contrast I headed off yesterday morning to a favourite spot right down the Huon estuary.  Solunar said "good bite between about 7 and 9 am".  It wasn't kidding.  I boated over 30 flatties in that period, of which 20 (a bag limit!) were good keepers: 34-40cm and plump with it.

Water temp was 15.5 deg C; water clear as a bell (could see bottom in 4+ metres) and breeze was nor-easterly around 10 knots - excellent drifting speed.

Went for a troll but only found 'couta and the occasional pike, so back on the trailer by 10am and off home to put fish in the freezer to share over Christmas.

Nice post Paul, thank you for sharing.

My grandkids  (and parents) are with us for a week and I would love to take the eldest boy fishing (5yo) but unlikely at present.  envy1

Sounds like you had a magic day

Cheers
