Biggun from down south !
« on: June 18, 2014, 07:05:40 pm »
Tony drove up from Hobart yesterday with this whopper weighing down the back of his ute !!  grin1  A shade under 20 lb , caught at Catagunya Lake . Put up a massive fight but finally succumbed after half hour on the line. Will be a challenge but a fun job, will send pics when complete down the track. thumbsup1

What does one do if they catch a fish they want mounted?
Should you keep it in the freezer?  think1

Cheers for that Tony. Yeah field care is important , it reflects in the finished mount. Dont gut the fish, fold the fins close to body, wrap tightly in cling wrap, lay on board or flat surface and freeze with show side up. Most importantly, (which a lot of fishos overlook)take good pics of the fish when fresh out of the water and still has its beaut colours. Good to have as reference when painting the colours onto the mount.  thumbsup1 Cheers.

Thanks for putting that up Chris, you beat me to it  grin1 Cheers for comments guys, Brad , I would think its a wild fish , don't know that Catagunya has ever been stocked , plenty of big fish are caught there (though this is the first one ive heard of of this size) they must have good food supply by the power station, well that's my theory, don't know the facts. Was good to meet you Tony (Rockinrobertson) , will take pics of stages of doing the mount, will post on here at a later date. thumbsup1

Its an awesome fish. Tony knows the area well.
Believe it or not there was a bigger one caught just the day before not that far from the boat ramp. Went 21.5lb and I think it was released also as it was a big female.

Look forward to seeing the final mount.

Wonder if there would be any fish that size in Lake Leake?  think1
The record for the lake is 14.5lb (out of Slaters Bay) what was caught back in the day. But just of Kalangadoo bay, Connor had a MASSIVE, I mean massive strike, had it on for about 5 seconds and dropped it. It mush have been a fish?  think1

I can't express how happy I am with the end result. John has been excellent throughout the whole process communicating with me all along the way asking if I wanted things done differently etc etc. If your ever thinking of getting a fish done then John is the man for the job. His passion for it is shown in the quality work he produces. Now all I need is a Big Rainbow for a matching pair.
Regards,
Tony

I can only get online when I am at work Brad. A glitch somewhere that won't let me login seems to be stopping me from getting on with my mobile or home computer. We have tried to solve it, but still can't work it out. Would be posting more otherwise. Glad to see everyone is still here though doing what they love.
regards,
Tony

I went up to see John on Tuesday and picked up the big fish. To say I was happy with how it turned out is an understatement. He done an exceptional job. The detail that goes into his work is really a credit to him. After seeing the completed mount I was really glad I decided to get it done. Now I just have to find somewhere to hang it lol. If your ever thinking of getting a fish done I would be giving John a call as you won't be dissapointed.
Regards,
Tony

Been away a while , cheers for comments guys, particularly Tony, thanks for the rap mate . Its always great to have a customers positive reaction to the finished job, that's actually a major motivation to keep me going . Tonys fish was a pleasure and a challenge to work on . Its nice to work on the bigguns from that region , they don't shed any scales during the skinning , boy did that beast have a thick, greasy skin !!  Took a lot of de fleshing n soaking in "soup" to get all the grease out. Tony wont have any probs with it, its built to last a life time . Im proud of the end result ,Its one of my favourite mounts so far , such a big good conditioned solid fish with a multitude of colours. I cast a critical eye ova all mounts that I do and there is little to fault on this one. grin1
Heres another pic , sorry I dunno how to post em bigger so you can see the detail, maybe one of the mods will kindly help me out n blow her up a bit  thumbsup1
                              Cheers Johnno.
p.s. Better go, got a freezer full of Cresent fish to tend to !! think1  grin1
