Fish wheel on the Yukon River
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:59:27 pm »
In the wilderness of the Yukon region of Alaska, communities build these fish wheels which they sit in the river and scoop up salmon.

They rotate in the rivers current without power and the fish go down a chute into a live box where they are taken out by net and cleaned.

Some of these wheels will catch upwards of 20,000lbs of king and chum salmon a year. Catches are reportable and the wheels are made to strict specifications and used for short periods of the year.

Worst part is most of the fish are used as feed for sled dogs wtf1
